How your table comes together

Four decisions, made together over a short conversation. Then it goes on the build schedule.

Step 1

Pick a design

Start from one of the six tables, or bring a photo of what you have in mind.

Step 2

Size it to your room

Any length and width. Tell me the room and how many you seat, and I'll suggest a size.

Step 3

Choose the wood

Red oak, white oak, maple, cherry, walnut or ash. Each one has its own grain and color.

Step 4

Choose the finish

Stain, paint, or a two-tone like the Hernando. I'll send samples on your wood before we start.

Every top is glued, rested a full day, then hand-sanded through every grit before the first coat goes on.

Sanding is the longest part of every build and the part you'll never see. It's why the finish looks deep and feels smooth under your hand years from now.

Six hardwoods

All solid lumber, no veneer and no particleboard. Real wood has knots and grain variation, and no two tops look the same.

Red oakOpen, bold grain. Our standard.
White oakTight grain, takes dark stains well.
MaplePale, smooth and very hard.
CherryWarms and deepens with age.
WalnutRich, dark and naturally figured.
AshStrong cathedral grain, light tone.

The maker

Hey, I'm Dwain.

I've been building furniture for 25 years. DeSoto Table Company is me, an 18-by-18 garage shop in Hernando, and a few of the tools that belonged to my dad.

I build two tables a month, and I don't hand the work off to anyone. Every table gets the same attention from the first board I pick to the day I deliver it to your dining room.

If you're local, delivery within 30 miles of Hernando is free, and I'll set the table up in your home myself.
